Why We Care

Girls’ body satisfaction hits rock bottom between the ages of 12 and 15. By middle school, up to 70% of girls are dissatisfied with two or more parts of their body, and once in high-school the majority of girls report having low self-esteem.

We need to make a change NOW. Students with low self-esteem perform worse in school than students with high self-esteem, and we believe all students, especially girls, have the right to perform at their full potential.

Getting to work with My Favorite Outfit was special for me because it really made us girls think about how important our bodies are, and that we’re all different shapes and sizes, and to appreciate how we came.’ – Nicole A., 7th grade

Why Clothing Matters

Clothing has a significant effect on self-esteem. 86% of Chicago Public School students are economically disadvantaged and many do not have the resources to fulfill basic needs, including clothing.

Over 70% of girls age 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school, when they feel bad about their looks.

For most students, the MFO pop-up boutique is their first time going shopping and having a say in what they like. We provide girls with the tools to take charge of their bodies and appearance so they can feel confident in everything that they do.
