Yesterday marked our first Pop-Up Boutique at KIPP Ascend Primary School in the North Lawndale area of Chicago. We are thrilled to report it was one of the most amazing experiences of our entire lives! Leading up to yesterday, we were nervous the girls would shy away from donated clothes or be hesitant to participate. That was not the case AT ALL. As soon as we explained to the fifteen girls in attendance they were free try on everything and pick six items to keep, clothes started flying!
All fifteen girls were hand-picked by KIPP teachers Tessa Catlett and Faith Anderson to participate based on their exemplary problem-solving skills, positive behavior, good hygiene, and their continued involvement in discussions surrounding self-esteem. Jada, a second grader and now a proud owner of 1 new shirt, 2 new pairs of pants, 1 pair of shoes and 2 pieces of jewelry said it all, “I look in the mirror and I feel like a fifth grader!’ Note that fifth graders rule the school.
By the end of the hour, my mom (volunteer and board member extraordinaire) was crying tears of joy and ready to take at least two of the girls home with her. Overall we gave out 27 tops, 14 bottoms, 8 dresses, 2 coats, 9 pairs of shoes, 12 pieces of jewelry, 6 scarves, and 9 fabulous purses. Most importantly, each girl left knowing hard work and good behavior is rewarded! We can’t wait to do it again.
